If you had a name sake, would you thank the parents for naming their child after you?

I combined my dad and brothers names for my sons middle name. I let them know. My brother REALLY wanted a name sake. Anyway, my brother seemed confused at the combination. And my dad never even acknoweleged it. They are not the type of people that I feel accepted by and so I do not like bringing personal things up. But I felt really disspointed that they were not happy about this. It is not like I am the first person ever to combine names.... Would you be dissapointed too?

I would totally be disappointed! But, I also have to ask the question- why would you name your child after people you don't feel accepted by? Not griping, just asking. I named my son after my brother (also middle name) and he was ecstatic. I also have a name-sake, and she isn't even in my family. It's the niece of a very good friend and she picked the child's middle name and thought of me. I was totally shocked and very humbled by the situation. I say if they don't acknowledge your child's name as being named after them, don't make a big deal, just don't allow them in the future to tell your child "Oh you were named after me". That would hurt my feelings. Good luck to you.
Reply:I believe in naming kids for relatives, but I've always liked the idea of using their real name or a close form of their name.

I really don't like the idea of naming a child a mix of two different names, but different strokes for different folks, you know?

I will say that I gave my older daughter the name my grandmother was born with (before my grandmother's name was changed at Ellis Island), but my younger daughter was given a name that started with the same letter as my husband's uncle. Well, today, I frequently think of my grandmother when I say my older daughter's name, but I'm not sure anyone thinks of my husband's uncle when we say our younger daughter's name. Part of a name just doesn seem the same.
Reply:I wouldn't be too worried about it. Sometimes, people think it would be overkill to thank someone about things like that.
