What is the meaning of naming a song "Lithium"?

I have heard several songs being named Lithium. One, for example, would be one from Nirvana being named Lithium. I have no idea what is the meaning behind naming a song Lithium. Ive looked it up and only found out its a basic element in the periodic table. Can someone help me solve this mystery that's been bugging?

What is the meaning of naming a song "Lithium"?
I'm not quite sure why someone would name a song "Lithium," unless maybe they were extremely grateful for the help it has been in their life! I was diagnosed bipolar at 16, and have been on lithium for more than 20 years, excluding pregnancies.

The comment, "The thing is that they then feel as if they are barely alive and missing out on life," doesn't apply to me. I have a full life; (husband, 3 kids, a full time job, etc.) It is true however that when a person goes off their prescribed medication, it can throw their life into turmoil.

Lithium is a MOOD STABLIZER, not an anti-depressive med. (In other words when we take it, we don't feel a high from it.)

Great question tho!
Reply:Lithium is also a drug that is used to treat bipolar disorder and depression. Does that help?
Reply:WELL it aint no mystery once you realize what it is....Lithium is an effective medication that can treat bipolar disorder. which lil Kurt Cobain most likely had. Thats why its like "i'm so happy..." at the verse cuz he's on drugs/in a "manic state"
Reply:If you listen carefully to the lyrics, he repeats over and over how he is happy, horney, etc.... it's an anti - depressant
Reply:I don't really think there's another meaning for the word "lithium". Evanesence used "Lithium" for the title of their song too. It kinda rolls off the tongue, don't cha think. Maybe they thought it was just a cool word?
Reply:It being in one`s brain in insufficient quantities creates the symptom of manic-depressiveness, so it is prescribed as a calming drug which tends to numb patients and prevent them from the queeny swings in their behavior. The thing is that they then feel as if they are barely alive and missing out on life and many stop taking them and get themselves into trouble. I am not a medical person and my answer is only based on one person who fit that description.
