I'm thinking of getting a starnamed after my bf for Valentine's Day. I'm wondering if anyone has ever done this? And knows of a good site to do this from? I found a couple sites and they range from 20 - 40 dollars. I'm wondering what the difference in them might be.
What's a good site for naming a star?
The Starnamer starts at 19.95 but you really need to shop around.
Although the International Star Registry was the first company to capitalize on the idea of naming a star, they are no longer the only "star in the heavens." There are dozens of options available to you ranging in price from nearly $200 down to Free Name a Star that, as the name states, registers your star name for free.
Know your place in the heavens. Many companies give you an option of whether or not you'd like the star you're naming to be visible from Earth without a telescope. If this is important to you make sure to specify when registering your star name. As an added bonus, some websites allow you to choose the astrological house where your star will reside.

and pick one out. Be sure you zoom out, move around (you can grab and drag), and look at some of the more famous objects. Make sure your star is smaller than 10th magnitude---that way, you'll know it's not already taken. (All the really bright ones have names already.) Maybe pick out a star that is not too far away from something spectacular---perhaps a planetary nebula that reminds you of him. Make sure you can get back to that star by putting the coordinates into the "search" box. Write down the coordinates and give them to your BF, and publish them on your Facebook page.
That will get you for free everything those "buy a star" scams will do for you.
Reply:Tom S is correct. Make your own certificate. It's as valid as the one you would get from any site. It's not valid at all, but it's the thought that counts.
Check the American Astronomical Society page below.
Reply:Just send me the money and I'll name it for you. I'll get you a nice bright one too, not like some of these sites.
Seriously, save your money. They're all con artists who should be locked up for preying on the recently bereaved, among others.

Reply:Why not just make up your own certificate, that's all you are paying for at any of these sites.
Reply:nice idea. zero official status.
some would say this is a rip off...
