Naming a police officer on yahoo answers is it some kind of offence?

If I told a true story on here about the Police in general and mentioned a police officers name about an ongoing and very trivial minor case, would that be some kind of offence if so what offence would it be, what's the punishment and what would they most likely do about it?

If the case is as you state "ongoing" then it would not be the wisest thing to do
Reply:There is no such law. It is a violation of federal law to reveal classified information, such as the bush administration did when they revealed the name of a CIA agent, but the names of police officers are not classified. If you libeled the officer on this site or in any other manner you could be sued for damages, but there is no criminal offense in merely mentioning the name of a cop.
Reply:I imagine it would be an offence to name someone on a site like this, especially a Police Officer and an ongoing case. Possibly be open to Slander or Defamation of Character charges. It would also affect the court case.
Reply:If the police officer found out he could take it up with the Police Federation who may sue you.If you say anything against the police then you better have witnesses and proof of what you are saying is true.
Reply:You can name anyone on here and describe their job it's not liable or defamation. Police are public employees and their names and salaries are public info.
Reply:thats called defamation of character and he can sue you and you will lose as the proof is all over the net. you might want to rethink this one!
