When did the current naming convention for roads in the UK start? Eg. A1, B202, A14
Road numbering started at the onset of World War 2. in an effort to confuse a potential enemy invasion by removing the place designation on signposts and replacing these with numbers.
Reply:A and B roads where first designated numbers in the 1920s. The first Motorway, a section of the M6 at Preston, was opened in 1958.
