What is the maximum number of letters/words allowed when naming a thoroughbred racehorse?

A racehorse's name can be no more than 18 characters long, and new names must be submitted to the Jockey Club to make sure there are no duplicates.

What is the maximum number of letters/words allowed when naming a thoroughbred racehorse?
18 units and that includes spaces, which accounts for horses with names like

Goingtowinthisrace because it is already 18 letters long and any space in between words would add to the total.

All new names must be submitted to the Jockey Club for approval.

Some names have been taken off the list and can not be reused.

Every year they put out a list of names newly available.

Or you can create your own.
