What is the suffix after Jr when naming a child after his father?

I think i asked this question the right way lol. thanks to all that helps

What is the suffix after Jr when naming a child after his father?
it depends. Normally, it would just be (example) John Smith, Jr. if he's just named after his dad. But if his grandfather is John Smith and his dad is John Smith,Jr then he's John Smith the third (Roman Numerals : III). But then again, sometimes people go by John Smith the second (II), so i'm not sure exactly what the difference is between The Second and Jr. i guess either The Second skips a generation like being named after his grandfather instead of his dad or Jr. requires the same first and middle name--both John David Smith-- but The Second could be John Quincy Smith and John David Smith. I'm not really sure how it works, but the suffix would be either Jr. or II. I'm pretty sure it's Jr.,though. But,again,it depends if his father is Jr. or not, but if he is, the son would be The Third or III.
Reply:The son would be the III (3rd)
Reply:I believe it is the Third (III).

ie: Jon Doe

Jon Doe Jr.

Jon Doe III
Reply:do you mean if dad is a jr, and you name the son after him? then its the 3rd. ex bob smith jr's son is bob smith the third.
Reply:the son of jr would be the 3rd : )
Reply:II (the second) I think
Reply:NOTHING.( FIRST,MIDDLE, LAST,JR)
Reply:The fifth one would be Jr., Jr., Jr., Jr.,...I think :D

C'mon, it was a joke, are all the thumbs down necessary?
