Is re-naming a dog confusing when it's already 1 year old?

There's the cutest dog at the local humane society, but I'm not happy with her name. If we do decide to get her, we want to give her a cuter name. She's barely a year old, but would it still confuse her if we re-named her?

You can change a dog's name no matter what the age. When I adopted one of mine at 1 1/2 years...his name was "Otis." It only took him a couple of days to figure out he now had a new name.
Reply:It is actually very easy for a dog to learn a new name. But it might be eaiser if the name resembles starts with the same letter or rhymes with the old one. If the dog does respond to their old name do this trick for a week call them their old name and then their new name and slowly get rid of their old name. When the dog does somthing good give them a treat and use their name if you renamed the dog Sally say Sally is a good girl good girl Sally. Or have the dog sleep in your lap not only does this bulid a load of trust but you can stroke them and say there name!
Reply:no you could rename a dog at any time. It shouldnt confuse them. Especially if it's from a shelter. Sometimes they just give them names they dont necessarilty know them. Name her whatever you feel fits her
Reply:At first it can be, but if you keep calling him by the new name he will eventually get used to it. When i got one of my German shepherds we had to change his name but he was 1 and a half and he coped with it alright but it sounded quite similar to the name that he previously had so it did not confuse him too much.
Reply:Not at all JANE. Yes it will be confusing to the dog for a little while though the alternative is that no one adopts the dog and cares for it so it will be killed. I think it's great you're adopting and would prefer the dog had a name you were willing to keep though that's minor in comparison.
Reply:No- her name probably wasn't her name before she got to the shelter anyway. Before that who knows how many homes/names she has had.

I doubt she got alot of attention at the humane society and got used to her new name anyway :)
Reply:yes it is ! dont change you're dog's name when u do that you're changing him and his or her personality
Reply:Not at all. Dogs will rapidly adjust to learning a new name.
Reply:We got our dog when he was 8 months and we didn't like his name either. We changed it to a name that sounds similar (both 2 syllables that end in an "ee" sound). He figured out the new name right away and had no problems at all. Good luck! :)
Reply:no
Reply:No, it's no big deal to rename them, besides, the names mean more to us than them. If you can pick a name close to their current name they will catch on faster.
