No matter what the name..nick names can always attach themselves...if u feel obligated to name them after someone with an oldfashion name u can always update/ refresh it ..or choose it as the middle name :D

At any rate...name your baby what you want...and screw every one else. Congrats!!!
Reply:I think its an awesome idea. Not a lot of people are using them now a days. I named my daughter Audrey Faye (Faye after g-ma). My son is Alden Joseph ( Alden after a deceased friend-Joseph after g-pa ). Both names are more like people in their 80's.

I knew my daughter would have a horrible time trying to say let alone spell it in school, so we gave her the nickname "Marnie". It is sweet, and also Irish. Just make it their own while still honoring the older person.

I'm assuming it's a Jewish Ceremony, right? All you have to do is let them know you are coming by phone, email, or return invitation. If it is a Jewish ceremony and it will be at a synagogue, they may want you to wear a kippah, or skullcap out of respect. I have 2 at the moment Raynah(3 yrs) and Ryland(3 weeks)....and I was talking with my husband about POSSIBLE future babies and "R" names....
Do you think its dumb when people do that? I kinda like it. I realize I'm setting myself up for a lot of confusion as far as calling them goes ..."Ray-----Ryland!!!!" lol
Also...if you have any R names that are unusual I'd like to hear them boys and girls!!

Since Raynah and Ryland are already similar, you should definitely break the trend if you choose to have more children. Give your next baby a name that is vastly different from the first two, preferably a name with no r's or y's in it. That would establish a separate identity for the children and they would know their names weren't chosen to keep with a theme.
My parents named my two brothers 'm' names that are quite similar, and their middle names were similar as well. It isn't strange, however, because my name is so different from theirs.

Reply:From personal experience I'm the second oldest of my cousins and the only one whose name doesn't start with the letter A a lot of people ask why I was the odd ball. It kinda gets me when my grandmother introduces us because (not real names) its like... Ana, Kathrine, Austin, Amber, Adraianne, Amy, Amory, Alex and so on... So I would definately keep going with the Rs so that they all feel that they are in a group or something. I just wouldn't get them sounding alike a lot or kinda giving them ryming names you know?

I am taking Chemistry 1070. We are studying polyatomic ions. On my study guide I thought the name for the compound, SnO was stannous oxide, but on the answer sheet my professor has tin II oxide. How do I know when to use stannous and when to use tin II, the same goes for how do I know when to use plumbic and when to use lead IV?

Hi all! My daughter and I are starting to make jewerly for craft shows. I also bake. On top of that I sell on ebay. I want to open and ebay store and incorporate all in one store. On ebay I normally sell educational materials, toys, kids clothes, housewares and the alike. I am just having trouble coming up with a name for the store. The jewerly is made from seashells. Sort of tell me that there is a lot of love with the tow people.

For example, in a story I wrote once, I named a German Special Agent 'Konstantin Schlagen.' His surname means: 'hitting' in German, which describes what he does, he is an eager fighter who is relentlessly pursues the criminals he's going after.
You said that she look's frightened, so might I suggest making her surname: ' Eagla?' From your description, she looks vaguely Irish; and 'Eagla' means 'scared' in Gaelic.
So my suggestion would be:

I don't know whether to cry or laugh at Margeret's response - about being a sub who can't figure out how to pronounce her student's names, and would like people to refrain from assigning their children names that are creative and evocative of a rich cultural heritage, because she has a hard time pronouncing them.
I make it my business to learn my Kwacys, Chilembwes and Ashanti's, and to know which one of my students is Darren and which one is Darion. I think Leila and Lliana shouldn't get mixed up and I certainly can distinguish Pablo from Pedro. And a classroom of Rayshawns, Quintaras and Xoichotl's is a lot more interesting than a tedious grouping of Ryans, Madisons and Regans.
It always saddens me when i say a kid's name back and they look at me in astonishment and say "wow, you pronounced my name right." It makes me think there are a lot of people who just won't listen if the name doesn't have an anglo cadence.
It's funny because I grew up going to a school where a lot of kids had hebrew names and I remember how we used to mock the subs that mangled the names beyond recognition. The thing is, Akiva, Vered, Ronit and Gilad sounded completely normal to us, since we all knew multiple people with names that were representative of our jewish heritage and culture. I remember quite clearly very much enjoying a similar guide to jewish baby names, and looking up all the names of my classmates and friends.
I'd love to read "Shontisha's guide to naming your black baby" when it comes out and learning more of the stories behind my student's names!

But I would like to say a little something regarding the comment about children's names. I was a teacher for almost five years (and might go back), and I had a number of children that said, when I asked to hear their name again, "You can call me..."
I said, "No. I want to call you by your name. You just need to help me." I spent time in a primarily Hispanic culture and can now have a much better Spanish accent. It takes practice.
I have a cousin that was adopted from Korea - they kept her Korean name for her middle name. Why? What's wrong with it being the first name?
My brother's children have names that are similar in both Spanish and English - that's an option.
What I hope is that you can find an angle which really hasn't been explored in the naming process. Pictures, similar names and spellings, numerology, I don't know, just something to make your book stick out.
I myself am of European descent, but my family is diverse, and I love it that way!

Would you consider using African names for the child's middle name, and just give them a run-of-the-mill American name for the first name? In fact, a couple of my own kids have 2 middle names, perhaps you could encourage parents to do the same, but still use a standard American first name just for school. Lots of kids have nicknames which they use everywhere but at school, so this has a lot of precedent.
I sub in an inner-city pre-school, and it's just so hard to remember these names. I'm European in descent (Ireland mostly), and I just went to the Bible for my kids' names. I have a somewhat exotic middle name --it's Greek, it's Aurora--but it's my middle name. In the ordinary course of the day's events, no one has to contend with that awkward name. My first name is pretty standard, with standard spelling.
I know this is a different perspective, but I have heard kids complaining that the teacher cannot pronounce their name right, even now, toward the end of the school year. It's frustrating to the kids and embarrassing for the teacher.
So please consider my point of view when you write that book. We love all our students, and hate it when we have to look at a child and say, "young man" because we can't pronounce or can't recall the name.

There's the cutest dog at the local humane society, but I'm not happy with her name. If we do decide to get her, we want to give her a cuter name. She's barely a year old, but would it still confuse her if we re-named her?

If the dog does respond to their old name do this trick for a week call them their old name and then their new name and slowly get rid of their old name. When the dog does somthing good give them a treat and use their name if you renamed the dog Sally say Sally is a good girl good girl Sally. Or have the dog sleep in your lap not only does this bulid a load of trust but you can stroke them and say there name!

I think it's great you're adopting and would prefer the dog had a name you were willing to keep though that's minor in comparison.

I have received a new pit bull/Akita puppy for Christmas and I am having a hard time naming her, please help?
She is 2 months old, her color is light brown/shiney bronze with a white stripe down from the neck on down to her chest and she has brown eyes. Very adorable and cute. She is a bit tiny. But she loves to eat.

Reply:I'd go with something Japanese after the Akita's heritage maybe Sakura or Miku and if you look at the Apbt side then look at its English roots.I own 2 Apbt,1Oeb and a Cane Corso so I know a name is important after all you will be calling them for the next 9-12 years so enjoy the process and if you get stumped please log onto the link provided.And make sure you socialize the dog because of her APBT side its very crucial for upbringing especially if other pets will be around.Good luck

I believe the singer is Spanish- not Mexican. The song is pretty corny as is most pop songs. Basically, the lyrics go: "me gusta boca boca, me vuelven loca loca...tus labios con mis labios es mi cancion..." The singer is female.

What's your opinion on naming your son/daughter the same name as your mother, father, etc? I find it lazy and terrible. It lacks creativity.

btw in my family it goes through generations and all the males names are are the same from Grandad to grandson

I think that is nice in a sense. The name is not a very common name either. Plus my dad, grandad, and great-grandpa were all in the military, so it shows a lineage in there. And since my dad is the only one alive now, it can honor my deceased relatives as well.
In general, I think it okay to name someone after a family member if it was tradition or if there is nicknames used for it. Like if you and your father were both named Joseph, your mom might call your dad Joe, and you Joey or just Joseph. Also if this has gone back for generations, like my family.
Another thing you could always do is change the name a little, to still honor a relative, but not copy their name, like how my mom was named, and how I have the same middle name as my mom and grandma. For example, if your grandmother's name is Kathryn, you could name your daughter Kaitlyn. Or if their name was Lucas, you could name your daughter, Lucille or Lucy. You can still honor a family member, just changing the name a little to make it different.

They never really named her and the nurses just called her "little Mary" and my mom was "big Mary". The name stuck! My sister survived and to this day is still known as little Mary, lol.
When I was pregnant with my first we found out it was a BOY! From the start my husband was adamant he wanted his first son named after him. I was like, no way, I am not naming my son Alfred! He was so insistent and it was so important to him I finally gave in. To avoid confusion we call my son by his middle name Scott which apparently is pretty common. The name goes back for generations in my husbands family. I feel holding names in the family is actually important and holds great value, not lazy or terrible at all! For 4 generations on my side the middle name Noell has been used for girls and I used it for my second child, a girl. I get compliments all the time on how pretty it is!

I know a guy who was named after his father, but he was so much more like his mother (didn't look a thing like his dad) and he always felt that he didn't meet his father's expectations. I think it's a little bit of arrogance if they voluntarily give the child the same name as the dad or the mom.. because they want their image to live on in their son or daughter instead of letting them be unique and individuals.. they can use their name as a middle name but i don't hold with naming a child after all the members of the family.. aunt cousins, MIL, grandmother.. that also gives the child no individulality. they can honor the dead by keeping them in their hearts and memory and the child can have an individual name. In the case of my mom.. it was unplanned and a coincidence that the stepma had the same name as my mom...and that her dad did not come up with calling one by the original name.. his wife and my mom Joanna.. that would have been better instead of calling them by numbers. Nr. 1 and Nr. 2.. Big xxx and little XXX..
Reply:I think you just trying to start arguments. I think it shows respect and that you want your child to have some of the same traits as your parents. When I have a girl her middle name is going to be the same as my mom's middle name and my middle name is the same as my grandma's middle name.

Gosh my kids names are quite traditional compared to some of these.
Andrew Charles (15) - considered Donald when pregnant (ex-husband's grandfather) but he looked like an Andrew when he was born.
Bethany Anne (12) - combination of my mother's name (Anne Elizabeth) and my ex-husband's mother's name (Elizabeth Anne).

Reply:Not really, unless you are trying to impersonate another book in order to trick consumers. You can't name your book Twilight 2, although you could name it Twilight as long as it wasn't about vampires (what is that book about?)
I would guess authors do choose their cover art based on a long-term relationships between authors and illustrators. Roald Dahl's illustrator is the only one I can think of right now, but that guy/girl did all his books.
Reply:The publisher will probably help with the title. They will also provide cover art. You'll have to be a best-selling author to have anything to say about the cover. You have to realize that the title, the cover art and the flap copy are all done to help sell the book. Publishers have people who know what will sell the best.
Reply:Publishing companies usually to change the title, actually, although the author usually has final say. Most of the time, cover-art comes from the publication company, too. They want something really eye-catching. I imagine that the author might have some choice, though.

Selfpublishers do not care if a book sells or not since they make their money off the author, not from actual sales (real publishers pay the author and make their profit from sales).
Reply:Not really, unless you are trying to impersonate another book in order to trick consumers. You can't name your book Twilight 2, although you could name it Twilight as long as it wasn't about vampires (what is that book about?)
I would guess authors do choose their cover art based on a long-term relationships between authors and illustrators. Roald Dahl's illustrator is the only one I can think of right now, but that guy/girl did all his books.
Reply:The publisher will probably help with the title. They will also provide cover art. You'll have to be a best-selling author to have anything to say about the cover. You have to realize that the title, the cover art and the flap copy are all done to help sell the book. Publishers have people who know what will sell the best.
Reply:Publishing companies usually to change the title, actually, although the author usually has final say. Most of the time, cover-art comes from the publication company, too. They want something really eye-catching. I imagine that the author might have some choice, though.
Reply:My publisher had me send them the name that I wanted then told me that I needed to also list several other alternatives in case the title wasn't available or marketable.
As for coverart it depends on the publisher. My created my for me and ask if I liked it.

takes a while usually. we just keep tossing names out there and wait for one to stick.

i look at the markings the pets have. (eg. all paws the same colour - socks; patch of different coloured fur over an eye - spot; fluffy fur - Fluffy; etc.). I also go by common names or famous animal names. (Parot - Polly; Dog [female] - Lassie; Cat - Fat Louis[Princesses Diary's Cat]; etc)
Also, I might wait awhile to see the pets personality. (eg. Always getting into trouble - Rascal)

What do you think about naming a baby after your own mother?
My husband and I are considering naming our baby after my mother. (she is still living) My husband seems to think his mother wouldn't mind, but I'm not convinced. We both love and respect my mother dearly, and like her name a lot. anyways...any thoughts? i'm curious if other people have done this.

I think it's a wonderful way to honor your mother and I don't think anyone would be jealous. But personally, I was named after my aunt and I hate it. Everyone calls me by my first and middle name to differentiate me from my aunt. I vowed to never name my kids after a living family member

If you two are dead set on the name then go for it...there is nothing wrong with it especially if you both agreed on it and are comfortable with doing this...or if it will prevent a problem then don't do it at all or use both of their names in your daughters names...like the first name be you rmom's and the middle be his mom's or give her two middle names with both parents names incorporated into it.

If you're worried about how your mother in law would feel, you should talk to her instead of worrying about it and then depriving your child of a beatiful family name. If your mother in law would feel hurt and left out if the kid isn't named after her, maybe you could give the child her name (or middle name) as her middle name. That might make it better.

Reply:I think it's a great idea. Plus, if you have another daughter maybe you could name her after the other grandmother! Anyways, it doesn't matter, they are your kids, and if you like the name then go for it. It all depends on what the name is though...maybe if it's a long name like Katherine or something you could have a nick name like Kate or Katie that way you wouldn't get confused. Also, you could use her name as a middle name if you wanted. Thats what my mother did with me, however she didn't make my sister's middle name after my paternal grandmother, and she never really minded (my grandmother didn't). I did that with my children too...I have two daughters and one is named after their paternal grandmother and since I don't really like my mothers name (it's Frances...not the best middle name!) I used my sister's name instead, that way there's kind of a balance.

If you two are dead set on the name then go for it...there is nothing wrong with it especially if you both agreed on it and are comfortable with doing this...or if it will prevent a problem then don't do it at all or use both of their names in your daughters names...like the first name be you rmom's and the middle be his mom's or give her two middle names with both parents names incorporated into it.

Reply:Naming your baby after your mother is a lovely thought. If you're worried about how your mother in law would feel, you should talk to her instead of worrying about it and then depriving your child of a beatiful family name. If your mother in law would feel hurt and left out if the kid isn't named after her, maybe you could give the child her name (or middle name) as her middle name. That might make it better.

Otherwise, I think it's lovely. You both have a special place in your heart for your mother and paying a tribute to her like that would be very sweet. Reply:I think it's a great idea. Plus, if you have another daughter maybe you could name her after the other grandmother! Anyways, it doesn't matter, they are your kids, and if you like the name then go for it. It all depends on what the name is though...maybe if it's a long name like Katherine or something you could have a nick name like Kate or Katie that way you wouldn't get confused. Also, you could use her name as a middle name if you wanted. Thats what my mother did with me, however she didn't make my sister's middle name after my paternal grandmother, and she never really minded (my grandmother didn't). I did that with my children too...I have two daughters and one is named after their paternal grandmother and since I don't really like my mothers name (it's Frances...not the best middle name!) I used my sister's name instead, that way there's kind of a balance.
